In the first article of this series, we introduced you to what a domain name is. Then, in the second, we illustrated what is the life cycle of a domain name through the creation of pokegpu.com.

While .com domain names have no restrictions, this is not the case for all existing extensions. Obtaining and owning a domain name is associated with legal obligations such as:

  • The actual use of a domain name. For example, a .Travel the domain name must be related to the tourism industry

  • Eligibility criteria. For example, the contact owner address of a .eu must be located in the European Union. Or one .Fr domain representing a city name requires providing a descriptive reason why the client wants this domain name

These conditions are set by the extension operator, the registry, and vary according to the extensions while evolving over time.

In this article, we will explain the roles of the different interlocutors linked to a domain name and some examples showing the extent of the diversity of the eligibility rules.

contacts

Many eligibility requirements are linked to contacts. A contact is a legal person (legal or physical) linked to a domain name with a given role. It contains information about the contact’s identity, such as name, address, email address, and phone number.

There are generally 4 types of contacts:

  • Registrant: the legal owner of the domain name

  • Administrator: the domain administrator. They have the ability to perform all possible actions on a domain name (change of DNS records, renewal, transfer, etc.)

  • Technical: a technical contact only has the ability to modify technical data on the domain name such as DNS records. However, they have no influence on the lifecycle of the domain.

  • Billing: The account responsible for all billing-related matters such as invoices and payment. By default, this is the account that created the order

By default, the technical and billing contacts are the same as the administrator.

As a customer, you can configure the holder, administrator and technical contacts when ordering a domain. The billing contact can be modified later in the OVHcloud Manager.

At OVHcloud, the holder is unique to a domain name. The modification of its properties is local to the domain name to which it is linked. However, technical and administrative contacts are worldwide. Changing their properties will change the properties of any services using those contacts, such as other domain names or web hosting you have ordered.

As an individual who wants to buy a domain to host a blog, you will often provide the same contact details for all 4 contacts. This is the simple case.

But there are situations where the four contacts can be different. Here are some examples:

An individual person

A company purchased the domain name directly from OVHcloud

A company has delegated the domain name via an OVHcloud reseller (the company is not our client)

Incumbent

You

The company itself, with the name of the CEO

The reseller’s client company

Administrator

You

Individuals with responsibility for domain name lifecycles in the enterprise. Often the CTO.

The reseller company

Technical

You

Operations engineer managing production changes to the website or service using the domain name

The reseller company

Billing

You

The company’s financial department

The reseller company

Data validation

As explained earlier, although each registry has its own rules for registration, you must provide up-to-date and accurate data to the registrar when creating your domain name. This way, you must provide at least an accurate name, mailing address, phone number, and email address. If you fail to comply with this requirement, your registration may be canceled by the registry. The control of the validity of the data provided by the holder can take place at the time of registration or during the life of the domain name. In any case, inaccurate data may lead to the suspension or even the deletion of the domain name, according to the rules of the Registries. Thus, being the link between the holder and the registers, the registrar is subject to these different rules and must ensure that the holders comply with them in this regard.

Thus, as a registrar, we may request specific documents from you. For example, the .that is to say which asks the declarant to upload certain specific documents to finalize the registration of your .that is to say domain name. This may be your VAT number (in the case of a legal person) or a copy of your Irish passport (natural person). Thus, the register requires the provision of a document appearing on a list so that the declarant can prove his link with Ireland.

In this logic, a client wishing to record a .EU must be a European citizen or prove that he resides in the European Union. Due to Brexit, the registration conditions have changed, preventing a British citizen residing in the United Kingdom from registering a domain name in .EU. The only exception being a UK citizen residing in the European Union – they are eligible to register for a .EU domain (more info here)

The other registries and therefore the extensions are affected by these specific conditions of eligibility for domain name registration. We’ll give you one last example. Indeed, if you wish to record a .Fr domain representing a city name, AFNIC asks you to provide a descriptive reason why you want this domain and/or supporting documents. If you are the mayor of a municipality and you wish to register a domain name in the name of this municipality, for example, you will have to prove your position. Following the explanations, AFNIC will authorize or not the recording.

Finally, there are certain extensions for which the registry reserves the right to cancel the registration because it does not meet the registration eligibility requirements. For example, this is the case of .Travel. This extension is open to all people, organizations and businesses related to travel and tourism. Thus, any player in the travel and tourism industry can register a .Travel domain name as long as it demonstrates a real link with the industry. When registering your domain name, you will only have to accept the special conditions concerning .Travel in the very last stage of your order, by validating your affiliation with this sector, before payment is made.

If any of the above applies to you, you will need to update your contact information when registering your domain name. the manage my contacts The feature is accessible in stage 3 of the order funnel. You just have to click on “Manage Contacts/Owner” in order to modify the Owner’s information or directly create a new profile respecting the eligibility conditions of the extension. Please see below:

And last but not least, as we explained above, there is also data verification after the creation of the domain name. Indeed, we may contact a particular registrant at the specific request of the registry when there is suspicion of inaccurate data. In addition, we also verify our customers’ data annually by sending an email to validate their email address and update their data if necessary. This is the ICANN process called WDRP for Whois Data Reminder Policy. As registrar, we reserve the right to suspend the domain if a problem is detected during these checks.

Conclusion

Customers have legal obligations and are required to comply with the rules provided by the registers. Often these rules are related to the registrant, one of the contact types associated with the domain name, but they can also be related to the use of the domain name.

This series of 3 articles is now over. It was an introduction to the world of domain names at OVHcloud.

We have a lot of topics to cover. In the next articles we will talk about technical and commercial issues.
For example, we can talk about the EPP standard, the most widely used communication protocol between registrars and registries. And how we test our system when some registries do not provide testing platforms.
We can also talk about the value of brand protection and the value of having a domain name for a business (even for offline activities).

Creating a website takes a lot of work and consideration. It is not enough to simply create a website or find a hosting provider to make it work on the World Wide Web. You also need a domain name to attract visitors and customers. If you think of your website as a physical store, the domain name is the business address. Without an address, potential customers won’t find your store in the real world, and the same goes for domain names and websites.

Fortunately, buying a domain name is not complicated and there are several methods to buy one. In fact, we have a step-by-step domain registration guide you should check out for pointers. That said, you can choose a domain name without spending a dime if you’re prepared to face a few caveats. We’ll show you how.

Get a Free Domain Name from These Tested Web Hosts

But first, some valuable information

There are a few things to consider when securing a domain name. Generally, domain names are not owned by you to be retained indefinitely. They are usually free for a year or two, after which the registrar will charge you for renewal. You can also lose the domain if you use it for what the provider considers illegal activity (spamming, for example). Additionally, almost all registrars reserve the right to make changes to the registration agreement at any time and without notice to you. Be sure to check out any potential registrar carefully before committing.

Domain names rarely come with privacy protection. This means that your information as the domain owner is publicly available to anyone snooping around the Whois database. If you’re a brick-and-mortar business and your information is already publicly available, privacy probably won’t be a major concern. However, if you are a blogger and do not want your home address to be available to everyone on the Internet, privacy is an important security step. Depending on the registrar you use, this can be as low as $2 per year or as high as $20 per year.

Now that we’ve got that sorted, let’s explore the three ways to get a free domain name.

1. Check out free domain registrars

Dot TK and Freenom are domain registrars that allow you to get a domain for free. They allow you to search for a domain and choose from one of five free extensions: tk, .ml, .ga, .cf, and .gq. These aren’t the suffixes you commonly see when browsing the web, so they can make your site, especially a business-focused site, look sketchy or even illegitimate. If you’re creating a personal blog or site, this might not be a major issue.

Please note that you do not own these domains; they are registered and owned by Dot TK or Freenom. You just have the right to use them, so you can’t sell or transfer the domain names to someone else.

2. Explore website building services

Website builders, services and tools that allow you to quickly create a website, also offer free domain names. However, free domain registration is only available for a limited time. Specifically, the domain name is included as part of a larger package and expires when said package is being renewed. This is usually a one-year window, after which you must pay to retain the domain according to the renewal fees dictated by the service provider. This could be ideal if you need temporary accommodation for a year or less, but beware: there are usually penalties associated with prematurely ending these plans. You may be charged a prorated fee for the time remaining on your annual domain, or you may even be charged the annual renewal fee.

Wix is a popular and versatile website builder that offers a free domain for one year with its annual plans. After that first year, however, you must renew the domain for $14.95 per year if you want to keep it. Wix’s free domain offer does not include private registration; you have to pay an extra $9.90 per year.

Weebly is another solid option. The website builder lets you get a free domain with its Pro plan (or other top-level subscriptions). After the one-year grace period, your domain name must be renewed for $19.99 per year with privacy protection billed separately at $10 per year.

Squarespace is another website builder option with a free 1-year domain name. Domains registered through Squarespace also include Whois privacy protection as part of the package, which is a steal if you go that route. Renewing domains with Squarespace costs $20.

Try a hosting like Hostgator for plans

3. Visit web hosting services

The third free domain registration method is using website hosting services. Much like website builders, web hosting services often bundle free domain name registration with their packages to entice you to commit to an annual plan. Much like website builders, web hosting services typically have penalty fees associated with early termination of the plan, so you may be liable for the full domain renewal fee if you decide not to subscribe. the subscription. With that in mind, this method is good if you need a free domain name for a year or less.

Recommended by our editors

Priced at $35.40 for an annual shared hosting plan ($2.95 per month for the first 12 months), Bluehost is one of the cheapest web hosting services that offers a free domain name . This plan does not include domain privacy, which is billed separately at $15 per domain per year. The price of domain renewal depends on the type of extension, but a .com renewal costs $17.99.

Hostgator includes free domain hosting with its annual or longer Hatchling plan ($3.95 per month for an annual plan). After the free period ends, domain renewal costs on average about $18.99 per year for a .com extension, with privacy protection billed at $14.95 per year.

Hostinger is another option to consider, with reasonable domain renewal rates. Its premium shared hosting plan costs $2.59 per month with an annual commitment, which includes a free domain during that time. Domain renewal with Hostinger costs $11 per year, and Whois protection costs an additional $5 per year.

Get a free domain name

Domain registration doesn’t have to be expensive. Registration services, such as Dot TK and Freenom, offer free domain names, and they’ll do the job as long as you don’t mind a funky URL extension. Web hosts, such as Hostgator and Squarespace, also allow you to grab a free domain name, but with time-centric limitations. Still, if your budget is tight, these free domain options come in handy.

If you have a business in the 21st century, having a dominant online presence is essential. However, it does take quite a bit of effort, including a fast, user-friendly, and mobile-friendly website. Before you do all of this, however, registering your domain is a process you cannot afford to skip.

Additionally, domain name registrars are responsible for managing your domain name on their servers after you register it. In addition to hosting your site, they also offer many different web hosting related services which will be discussed in more detail later in this article.

Benefits of using a domain name registrar

Registering your business has many advantages unique web address with a reputable domain name registrar. The biggest advantage is that it makes it much easier to build and manage your website. Other benefits include:

You can then check if the domain name you want is available. If your first choice is not available, then you will have to look for alternatives. For example, instead of using a .com domain name, you may want to consider other options such as a .io domain name.

Types of web hosting:

There are two different types of web hosting: share and dedicated. With shared hosting, your website will be placed on a server with other websites and you share the same IP address. With dedicated hosting, on the other hand, there is only one website per server, so your site won’t have to compete for resources with other websites.

For most small businesses, shared hosting is the most cost effective option. Nonetheless, dedicated hosting is preferred for speed, security, support, and convenience. Apart from these, other options include the following:

  • Cloud hosting

Domain names are registered by the thousands every day. In July 2021, 236,336 domains were newly registered daily on average across all top level domains (TLDs). Tens of thousands were also newly expired. Other months could be just as busy.

“Newly Registered” and “Newly Expired”. These are two terms I often wonder about. Newly registered domains are domains that someone has just reserved, usually through a registrar or web hosting company. Newly expired domains, on the other hand, are domains that someone had reserved but decided to give up for one reason or another.

Anything that happens after someone decides not to renew a domain can be referred to as a “domain name expiration cycle”.

Now, why is it even remotely relevant to know the domain name expiration cycle?

The short answer is that understanding this cycle can help you better manage the domain names that are essential to you or your organization. It can also help make sure that you don’t let any of those essential domain names get away from you.

Cursed was the guy (or girl) from Marketo who forgot to renew “marketo.com” on time– essentially leading to the downgrade of the company’s main website. Not to mention the app’s complete failure and operations paralysis as customers couldn’t log into their accounts. While this story had a happy ending, a white knight geek took action to save the domain, others weren’t so lucky.

Often, cybersquatters are looking for expired domains.

One of them is Wesley Perkins, who has repeatedly registered domain names that companies haven’t renewed on time. Perkins is known to charge exorbitant amounts in exchange for transferring domain names. Among the domain names that fell into its hands when they expired were:

Despite favorable decisions attributing the disputed estates to their former owners, the plaintiffs may have suffered damages which are not limited to financial losses. Perkins was known to redirect domains to adult sites, an association that could damage the reputation of any organization.

Note that it is also possible to lose beloved domain names after filing a dispute. An example would be titoni[.]com (WIPO Case No. D2019-0395). Titoni AG, the original owner of the domain, did not renew the registration. After some time, Synergy Technologies, LLC registered it. The Panel dismissed the original owner’s complaint, stating the following:

“The Panel wishes to stress that it does not assume that all renewals of expired domain names in error are evidence of bad faith registration of the domain name by a new registrant. The Panel also does not believe that the Policy is designed primarily to compensate for the errors or negligence of registrars or complainants in ensuring that domain names are renewed, unfortunate as that may be.

At the end of the day, when we let domain names expire, we essentially risk sending them back to the pool of available domain names, and someone else can get them back. This scenario can cause several issues, including being associated with cybersquatters or losing one or more critical areas for good.

The domain name expiration cycle

The book Management of critical domains and DNS, which I’m a big fan of, explains in detail the domain name expiration life cycle. Here is the chronology that can be deduced from it:

Day 0: Expiration day

The expiration date of a domain name shown on its WHOIS record marks the beginning of the cycle. If you do not renew the registration that day, the Registrar will be prompted to remove their name server. At this point, the domain name stops resolving. Website visitors are greeted with a message that says something like “This site cannot be reached.” “

Day 1 to 45: Holder’s grace period

At this point, the domain enters the Registrant’s Grace Period (RGP) which lasts up to 45 days. The previous registrant can still go through the usual renewal process, although this is not without risk. In fact, the registrar has the option of doing a “direct transfer” during this time, which means that the domain could be transferred to another party.

That said, most registrars will park the domain between the third and fifth day or so after the expiration date. Nameservers shown in WHOIS records would typically be replaced with something like ns1[.]fatcow-expired[.]domaineparkingserver[.]net and ns2[.]fatcow-expired[.]domaineparkingserver[.]report.

On the parked page, the registrar may display ads or notify other parties of their intention to auction the domain. Other parties may also express an interest in purchasing the domain, especially if it is popular, strongly return-related, or generic.

Day 46: Repayment period

After day 45, the domain is returned to the registry and enters the redemption period. At this point, only the previous owner can buy back the domain, but at an additional cost.

The domain’s WHOIS record would show redemptionPeriod and clientTransferProhibited status.

Day 90: Pending deletion period

The domain remains in the redemption period for up to 45 days. After that, or on day 90, the domain enters the PendingDelete period. This status means that it is too late to renew or buy back the domain. It will be deleted after five days and marked available for anyone to sign up.

Some takeaways from the domain name expiration cycle

We learn several important things from the domain name expiration cycle, including:

  • Not renewing domain names can be a problem. Up to 45 days after you let the domain expire, anyone (including cybersquatters and competitors) might be able to take over the domain. Registrars would naturally try to make money from the domain.
  • An “available” domain is not necessarily a “new” domain. It could be one of the areas that went through the whole cycle and was deleted by the registry. The domain could have been flagged as malicious and placed in clientHold status.

All stages of the cycle are shown in the domain’s WHOIS records. Customers who wish to purchase an “available” domain may first verify its historical WHOIS details as part of a background check.

Analyze the expiration cycle of a malicious domain name

In addition to the normal statuses reflecting the natural life cycle of a domain name described above, historical WHOIS records for malicious domains can be different. How? ‘Or’ What? Let’s illustrate this using the securityonline-reviewaccountlimitedonline domain[.]com. Some facts about this area:

  • It was flagged as “dangerous”.

  • It is currently available. Anyone can register the domain.

The chronology of the WHOIS history of the malicious domain can be illustrated as follows:

Less than a month after securityonline-reviewaccountlimitedonline[.]com was created, its status changed to clientHold, although all other WHOIS details remained unchanged. This status is one of the indicators set by registrars that could indicate verification, billing, or legal disputes.

Since we are dealing with a malicious domain, it is highly likely that the clientHold status is the result of involvement in malicious activity. Additionally, a owned domain is no longer enabled in DNS and, therefore, should not resolve itself.

Essentially, this example shows us that customers who want to purchase an available domain can first look for such red flags in the domain’s WHOIS history. Using a domain that has been used in malicious campaigns can damage a company’s reputation and ultimately lead to serious financial loss.

Conclusion

Understanding the domain name expiration cycle helps registrants avoid unnecessary costs associated with domain name disputes or increased registration fees. Additionally, knowing how steps are represented in domain WHOIS records can provide information to safeguard business decisions, such as which domain (s) to use and which not to use.
