ExpiredDomains.net isn’t just a resource for determining which domains to buy in the drop.

I started getting a bit interested in .gg domain names a few years ago, and found some good domains to register from an unexpected source: ExpiredDomains.net.

I use ExpiredDomains.net to find expiring domains, but note that the name is expired areas. You can also sift through already expired domains on the service using filters of your choice. While all good .com domains are taken in direct auctions, some good names in less popular extensions pass deletion when you can register them manually.

Here’s how I find available single-word .gg domains that have already expired:

1. Go to the “Deleted Domains” tab at the top of the site

2. Select ccTLD G then .gg

3. Click “Show Filter”, go to the Dictionary Word Domains area, select English and a maximum word.

4. Click the button to apply the filter and you will see a list of recently expired single word .gg domains.

The resulting list shows the domain, the metrics you select for each column, the deletion date, and the registration status. Take a look at the types of domains that have already been re-registered to see what’s popular. For example, when I ran this search, products.gg, drum.gg, and luminary.gg were re-registered. Snakes.gg, phobia.gg and firefight.gg were still available. (You can also see the domains that were taken from the drop by clicking the “Caught Domains” button and selecting the TLD of your choice.)

I used this method to register fraternity.gg and hideout.gg, which I then sold. .Gg is getting more competitive, so it’s harder (but still possible) to find decent expired domains. But you can use this tool to find expired domains in just about any top-level domain.

New Study Indicates Domain Registration Fraud Is Rising in the Post-Pandemic Era

In the age of the pandemic, people have become anxious. And when people get anxious, they seek information. In this case, they looked for information on the daily number of COVID cases, new variants, vaccinations and health recommendations. Inevitably, they took to the internet – often daily – to find answers.

Unfortunately, cybercriminals see it less as a crisis than an opportunity. The massive increase in online activity coupled with the widespread adoption of work-from-home (WFH) arrangements has allowed these criminals to plant “hooks” in the form of deceptive and suspicious domain registrations, driving the launching phishing and fraud attack campaigns.

To find out more, we conducted a two-year analysis to explore how the outbreak affected online content, focusing on domain name registrations during this time. Here is what we found:

There was a clear correlation between the occurrences of “real world” events and the increase in suspicious domain registrations. During our two-year research period, more than 478,000 domain names referenced key terms associated with the coronavirus, including “covid”, “covid19”, “coronavirus” and “vaccine”. The surge in registrations has led to more suspicious and malicious incidents, posing threats to brands and consumers due to registration patterns and behaviors.
We took a close look at Omicron domain registration data and found that as of early January 2022, over 2,300 domains existed with names containing the term “omicron”. Of the 1,194 domains registered in 2021, 832 (70%) were registered during the two-week period between November 26 and December 9, immediately after the new COVID variant name was announced. A number of suspicious domains cause traffic to be misdirected/redirected, leading users to fake insurance agency and even relationship/life coach websites. But others seemed more troublesome and fraudulent, claiming to provide information about Omicron while soliciting donations or promoting cryptocurrency investments.

Other malicious domains are connected to sites that are currently inactive but are ready to host potentially dangerous content in the future – such as posting fake documents related to treatments, tests or even information about the ” omicron hoax” – to distribute malware payloads. Dormant sites are a popular tool for cybercriminals, who simply “activate” them when they are ready to launch an attack campaign. It should be noted that a large portion of dormant malicious domains are registered through consumer-grade registrars, which are less secure than enterprise-grade registrars, and have been linked to trademark infringement, abuse of brand and fraud/phishing attacks.

-We assessed website-related registration models using top brand names including Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States and the World Health Organization. (WHO). We discovered that 80% of the 350 domains containing the brand names were registered with third parties.

Half of the domains displayed no real web content and therefore were inactive. Of the inactive domains, nearly a third are configured to send and receive email with active mail exchange (MX) records, essentially giving hackers a launching pad for malicious attacks. Many sites using the trustmark names appear to be aimed at collecting personal information, distributing malicious content through legitimate-looking emails, or directly soliciting financial donations.

So what should organizations do in light of the results? We recommend the following four best practices:

1. Deploy a defense-in-depth approach to domain management. Assess your domain registrar’s security, technology, and processes. Implement two-factor authentication and monitor Domain Name System (DNS) activity. Invest in enterprise-class registrars, which take advantage of advanced services like…

2. Avoid mainstream registrars. These registrars generally do not offer the range of protection described above with enterprise-class registrars. Research identity marks and copyright abuse online and track all brand mentions on relevant social media, while monitoring major app stores and taking action against ads that lead to poor direction of traffic that harms your brand. In the event of fraud and IP infringement, be prepared to apply marketplace delistings, social media page suspensions, mobile app delistings, cease and desist letters, removal of fraudulent content and mitigation of threat vectors.

Trump-Related Domains and Subdomains Tracking Results

The January 6, 2021 US Capitol Riot was an unexpected event following the 2020 US election. The incident also made headlines around the world, prompting us to follow the trend of domain and subdomain registrations. linked to Trump. We also looked at two areas for Trump’s e-commerce stores that Shopify closed.

Closing of Trump’s online stores

Some entities have planned to withdraw their trade relations with Trump’s organizations. For example, Shopify announced on January 7, 2021 that it was shutting down two e-commerce sites owned by Trump Organization — trumpstore[.]com and shop[.]donaldjtrump[.]com. Indeed, visit the shop[.]donaldjtrump[.]com on Jan 19, 2021 still results in an invalid request error.

However, the Trumpstore domain[.]com is already operational since January 18, 2021. It was down from January 7 to 14, 2021 but was redirected to Trump[.]com / trump-store, according to photos taken by the Wayback Machine.

The website’s recovery occurred after its WHOIS records were changed on January 17, 2021, as revealed by the WHOIS history search. Specifically, the reporter’s contact organization has changed from The Trump Organization to DTTM Operations LLC. Typosquatting of domain names: We downloaded the weekly typosquatting data feed from January 4-10 and January 11-17, 2021. Next, we counted the number of domain names that contained the string “trump”.

Subdomains: We have also retrieved all subdomains containing the string “trump” that were added to the Domain Name System (DNS) on January 6, 2021.

The domains retrieved by the Typosquatting data feed include those registered in bulk as well as other domains of similar appearance. Mass domain registrations of domain names containing the string “trump” began to decline a week or two after the US election on November 3, 2020..

None of the Trump-related domains registered in the weeks ending January 10 and 17, 2021, have been publicly registered under the Trump Organization or DTTM Operations LLC. Here are some examples of domains:

The subdomain search returned 247 subdomains containing the string “trump” which made their way into the DNS as of January 6, 2021. These subdomains were linked to 74 domain names, all of which could not be attributed to Trump Organization or DTTM Operations LLC based on Bulk WHOIS Lookup Results. About 62% of domains, in fact, had WHOIS records drafted or protected by confidentiality.

Namecheap domain name registrar today released its 2020 Domain Insights & Trends report (pdf).

With over 12 million domains under management, Namecheap has important data to show registration trends. However, the data is still skewed by price. But dig a little deeper and you can uncover the “real” story.

Start by looking at Namecheap’s most registered domain extensions in 2020:

I did dig a bit deeper, though, and you can guess how pricing plays a role. Cheap domains usually renew at lower rates. Here are the domains with the ten lowest renewal rates at Namecheap (all below 20%):

It’s interesting to see .link on the list. .Com renewed at 58.97% at Namecheap. That’s well below Verisign’s mixed turnover rate in the 1970s, but renewal rates in the first year are much lower. Namecheap is a fast growing registrar, so many .com domains registered are newer registrations.

In fact, .com is gaining ground at Namecheap. It represented 37% of registrations in 2019 and 48% of all registrations in 2020.

Another interesting data point in the report is when Namecheap sees the most records. Verisign reports that the first quarter is its best quarter for registrations. But at Namecheap, August-November are the hottest months.

Finally, a word about the Namecheap clientele. Half of its clients have only one domain. Over 90% of its customers have ten or less. This is the sign of a healthy registrar that is not overly dependent on domain investors. In fact, only 0.5% of its customers have 100 or more domains, with the largest having 108,776 domains.

There are many domain name spinning tools that help you find domains to register. I recently became aware of one who takes a very different approach from others.

UIDomains.com examines trending keywords in registered .com domain names and combines them with the user’s keyword.

In the background, UIDomains examines all domains registered today and the word frequencies within the domains. It then keeps track of which words tend over time.

the Daily Domain Keyword Trends report shows what words are in buzz and how it has changed over time. The number in the blue box shows how many domains with the term have been registered in the last day.

Compare that to a traditional name spinner like LeanDomainSearch, which uses the most popular keywords across domains as a static list for name rotation.

Of course, trending words may not be suitable for your search term. Trump and Biden are all the rage today, but the terms don’t make sense for many domain registrations.

The service also offers a more traditional rotation by comparing your keyword to lists of common keywords, 4 to 5 letter words and other lists. This can be changed in the advanced settings.

UIDomains performs domain searches in two modes. Fast mode is extremely fast, but only 95% accurate. It’s frustrating: the names that appear to you as applicants for registration are the most likely to be false positives. Whenever I noticed a convincing name that showed it was available, it turned out that the domain was already taken. There is a slower mode which is more precise.
